The Ascomycete Conservation Specialist Group is making global assessments of the conservation status of 715 non-lichen-forming ascomycetes (including anamorphic fungi) as its contribution to the IUCN Sampled Red List Index for Microfungi. Selection of species is being made, as much as possible on a proportional basis, from each of the ascomycete orders recognized in the 9th edition of Ainsworth & Bisby's Dictionary of the Fungi, and from the two artificial classes of anamorphic fungi, the Hyphomycetes and Coelomycetes. The table below sets out all of these groups, indicating those excluded because they form lichens (and so are covered by the IUCN Lichen Specialist Group). For the groups which are not excluded, the table also provides information about the total number of known species, and the number of species to be sampled. Note. The categories "coelomycete" and "hyphomycete" are recognized for anamorphic fungi, thought to be ascomycetes, but which do not produce the characteristic sexual stage. Following the 9th edition of Ainsworth & Bisby's Dictionary of the Fungi, the numbers in these two groups have been reduced by 15% (an estimate) to account for those species already counted through their teleomorph (sexual stage) name.
Scientists with suitable experience and knowledge of ascomycetes and anamorphic fungi are invited as volunteers to assess different species as part of this project. They are also invited to comment on the lists set out below, and to propose other species for inclusion. Please send all communications to the Project Co-ordinator.
