HISTORY OF TAXONOMIC MYCOLOGY IN BELARUS:
A BIBLIOGRAPHIC SURVEY

Ustilaginomycetes, Exobasidiomycetes, and Microbotryomycetes

The first smut fungus published for Belarus was Ustilago segetum from Belavezhskaya Pushcha (Błoński, 1888; 1889).

Some data on smut fungi from Belarus occurred in the year-book on plant diseases and damage, published in St-Petersburg, for example, Ustilago avenae (Jaczewski, 1907: 54). Eight species from the genera Ustilago, Tilletia, Urocystis (Ustilaginomycetes) and Sphacelotheca (Microbotryomycetes) were published by Kastory (1912). Schembel (1913) listed 4 Ustilago species. The papers by Lebedeva included: 2 Ustilago species (1925, Erstes...), 5 species of the Ustilaginomycetes and 1 Sphacelotheca species (1925, Zweites...), 2 smut fungi (1935). Three smut fungi were identified by Nestertschuk (1927). Two species were reported by Kuprevich (1931, Fungi...). Four smut fungi were published by Tupenevitch (1932, Die parasitischen…). Five smut fungi species were published by Tumiłowiczówna (1935) for Valkavysk vicinity.

The fungi Ustilago zeae and U. reiliana were described by Guletskaya (1958, The mainest…). Short morphological descriptions of 26 species were included in a book by Gorlenko (1969), without data on distribution. In the book devoted to MSK herbarium 5 species from the genera Antracoidea and Ustilago were reported (Belomesyatseva & Shabashova, 2006: 372).

From the Exobasidiomycetes the representatives of the genera Entyloma and Exobasidium were recorded by Belarusian workers. Two Entyloma species were reported by Gorlenko (Gorlenko & Pan'ko, 1972). Exobasidium vaccinii was recorded by Błonski (1889), Schembel (1913), Lebedeva (1925, Erstes...; 1925, Zweites...), Tupenevitch (1932, Die parasitischen…), Tumiłowiczówna (1935), Galynskaya (1996), Gorlenko and Buga (1996), Belomesyatseva and Shabashova (2006: 373). Exobasidium warmingii was reported by Nestertschuk (1927), Exobasidium cassandrae – by Lebedeva (1935), Exobasidium vaccinii-uliginosi – by Tupenevitch (1930).
