Names currently being checked for Sampled Red List Index

Logo of the Darwin Initiative

The following list is being edited. It is based on the original random selection of 1500 names of lichen-forming and non-lichen-forming ascomycetes and and their anamorphs. It forms the second step towards the list of 1500 ascomycete species to be used in the ascomycete component of the World Conservation Union (IUCN) Sampled Red List Index project. Information about the reasons for making this selection and the sampling process can be found on the Sampled Red List Index Work page of this website. In many cases, names in the present list are either unsuitable (for example the name of a species known only as a fossil may have been randomly selected) or not in current use. As editing progresses, they are being replaced by suitable names and names better reflecting current taxonomic opinion. Information about the editorial process of updating those old names can also be found on the Sampled Red List Index Work page of this website. In the following list, a hyperlink is provided for each name. Where the name is known to the Cybertruffle Nomenclature & Taxonomy Database, the name itself is the hyperlink, with an additional note where the name is in current use. In other cases, a link to the IndexFungorum website is provided. There is a note where a new name has replaced an original name which was unsuitable. After the main list, there is a supplement listing all the names which have already been replaced, and the reasons for replacing each.
