ASCODICHAENA Butin. Ascodichaenaceae. 1 Ukrainian species on Fagus and Quercus.

Ascodichaena rugosa Butin [click here for picture]. Status. Native; 16 records since 29 May 1993; probably widespread and common in Ukraine, with many further records not yet captured by this database. Months. May, June, July. Regions. Crimea, Zakarpatska. Habitat. On living and dead twigs and bark of Fagus sylvatica, Quercus petraea, Quercus pubescens and Quercus robur; sometimes also forming extensive black crusts on the trunks of living Fagus sylvatica. Notes. In a family of its own and, consequently, rather unlike other members of the order; often mistaken for a lichen; most often encountered as the conidial state, with no records yet of ascocarps in Ukraine. Worldwide. Ascodichaena rugosa is widely distributed and abundant in Europe and North America on members of the Fagaceae, with additional records from Pakistan and Chile, possibly as an introduction.
