FUNGI OF UKRAINE, RHYTISMATALES

HYPODERMELLA Tubeuf. Rhytismataceae. 1 Ukrainian species on Larix.

Hypodermella laricis Tubeuf [click here for picture]. Status. Possibly native; 1 record; abundance not known, but other records probably exist in forest pathology literature. Months. No information. Regions. No information. Habitat. On dead needles of Larix sp. Notes. This species causes a disease of Larix, killing needles which then remain attached to the short shoot, with a prominent black zone line at the point of junction; the four clavate ascospores in each ascus are characteristic; it may be distinguished from Lophodermium laricinum (not recorded from Ukraine, but likely to be present) which has eight threadlike ascospores in each ascus, and fruits on dead fallen needles. Worldwide. Widespread but local and, perhaps, generally uncommon on various species of Larix in parts of Europe, North America and Siberia. References. Minter (1988a) [description]; Minter & Dudka (1996) [Ukrainian records]; Morochovskii, Zerova, Lavitskaya & Smitskaya (1969) [Ukrainian records].
