FUNGI OF UKRAINE, RHYTISMATALES

HYPOHELION P.R. Johnst. Rhytismataceae. 1 Ukrainian species on Schoenoplectus.

Hypohelion scirpinum (DC.) P.R. Johnst. [click here for picture] Status. Native; 26 records since 16 June 1960; apparently locally abundant, recently recorded from lakes in the north-west of Volyns'ka Oblast'. Months. May, June, July, August, September, October, November. Regions. Kiev, Volyns'ka. Habitat. Fruiting on dead stems of Schoenoplectus [=Scirpus]. Notes. Schoenoplectus is not an easy plant from which to make collections, as it often grows in inconveniently deep parts of rivers and lakes; as a result Hypohelion scirpinum is almost certainly under-recorded in Ukraine as elsewhere. With a rowing boat or canoe, this fungus is, however, easy to find: after locating the associated plant, collect dead attached stems whose tops have broken off at a point below the water surface, and the fungus will often be found on this material at a depth of about 60 cm. Worldwide. Widespread but infrequently recorded on Schoenoplectus stems in Europe and North America. References.
