FUNGI OF UKRAINE, RHYTISMATALES

NAEMACYCLUS Fuckel. Rhytismataceae. 1 Ukrainian species on Pinus.

Naemacyclus fimbriatus (Schwein.) DiCosmo, Peredo & Minter [click here for picture]. Status. Native; 13 records since 25 September 1960. Months. May, June, September. Regions. Crimea. Habitat. Fruiting on the apophyses and inner scale surfaces of dead fallen female cones of Pinus nigra, Pinus nigra var. pallasiana, Pinus sylvestris, Pinus sylvestris var. kochiana; also occasionally on dead fallen needles of Pinus nigra var. pallasiana; usually found at sites where fallen cones have accumulated and dried out; sometimes associated with other fungi, including Lophodermium pinastri. Notes. On the basis of its external appearance, this fungus is most likely to be mistaken for a species of Stictis or some similar member of the Ostropales; the rostrate ascus apex, however, is clear evidence that it correctly belongs in the Rhytismatales. Worldwide. Widely but unevenly distributed and only locally abundant on pines throughout Europe and eastern North America; possibly indicative of natural forest. References. DiCosmo et al. (1984) [description]; Minter & Dudka (1996) [Ukrainian records].
