Therrya pini

Therrya fuckelii (Rehm) Kujala [click here for picture]. Status. Native; 1 record on 14 June 1925; probably quite widely distributed, but very under-recorded. Months. June. Regions. Kirovohrad. Habitat. Fruiting on paler, brittle, dead twigs of Pinus sylvestris, probably initially attached to the tree, but rapidly falling and most usually observed in the litter under mature trees; no needles remain attached to colonized fallen twigs, and the bark is usually intact and pale reddish brown, with no basidiomycete fruitbodies or lichens; the related species, Therrya pini can be found under apparently exactly the same conditions, sometimes on the same twigs. Notes. Records of Therrya, based on field observations alone or on immature fruitbodies, and not identified to species level, exist from Ukraine. At least some of these records probably relate to this species. Worldwide. On twigs of various species of Pinus, but mostly recorded from Pinus sylvestris; widespread in Europe and North America. References. Minter (1997f) [description]; Minter & Dudka (1996) [Ukrainian records].
