Personal details. Cuban, male, year of birth 1951.

Qualifications. Doctor en Ciencias Agrícolas, 2002, Universidad Central de Las Villas, Cuba.

Current position. Scientific curator of the fungus collection of the Instituto de Investigaciones Fundamentales en Agricultura Tropical "Alejandro de Humboldt" (INIFAT) since 1981, and member of its Scientific Council. Visiting Professor of Waterloo University y member of the Mycological Society of Japan since 1998.

Experience. Mycologist, expert in the systematics of conidial fungi. Collaborated in studies on the diversity of fungi in Cuba, the Canary Islands, Brazil, Venezuela, Mexico, Nigeria and Canada. Isolated more than 5000 strains of common, rare and new microfungi, deposited in various fungal collections (IMI, CBS, MUCL, UAHM, JE, ATCC). Described 70 new genera and 400 new species of microfungi in tropical areas since 1983. Experienced in data-entry of computerized biological records. Scientific participant in the following projects: Fungi of the Caribbean (Darwin Initiative, 1997-2000); Biodiversity Conservation in Cuba (Darwin Initiative, 2001-2004).

Scientific events. Participant in different international and national scientific events. Presented seminars and courses in the Universidad Simón Bolívar (Venezuela), Waterloo University Ontario (Canada) and Zulia University (Venezuela).

Relevant societies and activities. Member of the Asociación Latinoamericana de Micología (ALM). National prize of the Academy of Sciences of Cuba (1995 y 2001 for study of fungal diversity in Cuba and the tropics). Prize for Plant Pathology in 2002 in the Sociedad Cubana de Fitopatología and the American Phytopathological Society. Distinguished researcher of the Ministry of Agriculture of Cuba, 2002.
