Sergey Fedorovich Negrutsky

Sergey Fedorovich Negrutsky was born in Novo-Grygoryivka village (Voznysens'ky district, Mykolaiv oblast, Ukraine). From 1942 to 1947 he took part in the Great Patriotic War [Second World War] and the subsequent war with Japan. In 1951 after graduating from the Voronezh Institute of Forestry Engineering, he became a postgraduate student at the same Institute. In 1955 he defended his candidate degree then, from 1954 to 1957, he worked as a lecturer, from 1958 as a senior lecturer, and from 1965 as professor. From 1957 to 1966, he was head of the Chair of Botany, Plant Physiology & Microbiology of Luhansk Agricultural Institute. In 1964 he was accorded the academic status of Doctor of Biological Sciences, and after the opening of Donetsk State University, he was head of the Chair of Plant Physiology (1966-1998).

S.F. Negrutsky was a founder of the Donetsk school of plant physiologists and mycologists: he supervised 20 students as candidates of science and 3 as doctors of science. He was an outstanding plant pathologist, mycologist and plant physiologist. The main scientific lines of his research were the biology, physiology, biochemistry, genetics and ecology of the fungus Heterobasidion annosum, and the physiology and biochemistry of conifers affected by this pathogen. He published more then 370 scientific works and monographs, and was co-author of 17 certificates of authorship and patents. In 1985 he was awarded the title of Honoured Worker of Tertiary Education, in 1996 he became an Honorary Member of the Ukrainian Society of Plant Physiologists, and in 1997 he became an Honorary Member of the Ukrainian Botanical Society. For achievements in the national economic development of the USSR, he was awarded a silver medal in 1983, and a gold medal in 1984.
