Qualifications. Diploma of T. Shevchenko National Kiev University, 1982; PhD (Candidate of Biological Science) Kiev, M.G. Kholodny Institute of Botany, 1986; member of UUPN (UK-Ukraine Professional Network); member of Ukrainian Botanical Society; holds Ukrainian driving licence.

Previous achievements. Participant in Darwin Initiative project Fungi of Ukraine (1994-1996) (author of ascomycete entries in major checklist produced from that project) and Biodiversity Information in the former Soviet Union (1999-2002); joint-editor of proceedings of Ukraine's first National Conference for Conservation of Biodiversity, Kaniv, 1997; represented Ukraine at "Scientia Europaea-2", a pan-European Conference of young scientists (Pornichet, France, 1997); Ukrainian Co-ordinator for Royal Society project Electronic Maps of Ukrainian Fungi & Plants; sabbatical study (Robinson College, Cambridge, Cambridge Colleges Hospitality Scheme, 1999); participated in the conference "Biovision Forum" (Lyon, 2001); some experience of experimental work with cultivated mushrooms (Weser Champignon, Germany, 2001, 2002); Ukrainian Co-ordinator of An Environmental Action Plan for Balaclava (UK DFID SEPS, 2001-2002); participant of the project Fungi of Crimea (National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, 2000-2002), author of section on ascomycetes in the monograph produced within that project; Member of Organizing Committee of XIV Congress of European Mycologists; Founder Member of the European Mycological Association; participant in Recovering Ukraine's Lost Steppe (UK Darwin Initiative project, 2002-2005); Ukrainian co-ordinator of Encouraging Sustainable Development of the Crimean South Coast (UK DEFRA, 2004-2005); Scientific Manager for Planning Management & Educational Sustainability on Ukraine's Military Sites (UK DFID SEPSII, 2005); Ukrainian representative of the ECCF; author or co-author of about 70 publications, including 3 monographs.

Current activities. Participant in the following projects or events:
  • Fungi of the Left Bank of Ukraine (National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, 2003-2007);

  • Establishing a Network of Ecologists in Ukraine (British Ecological Society, 2006-2008);

  • Co-ordinator of the ECCF Working Group for Microfungi Conservation.

  • Secretary to the 6th International Congress on the Systematics & Ecology of Myxomycetes scheduled to be held in Ukraine in 2008.

    Expertise. Mycology, botany; specialist in Ascomycetes, for many years studying the systematics of wood-inhabiting pyrenomycetes, particularly the Valsaceae including anamorphs and, more recently, the Xylariaceae; considerable experience of data-entry and data editing for computerized biological recording; environmental management, including production of local environmental action plans, and integrated land management plans, with particular experience of environmental conservation of military lands.

    Expeditions & fieldwork. Publicity Manager and participant in Royal Geographical Society's first Ralph Brown Expedition (1998); member of numerous expeditions in Ukraine including Carpathians and Crimea; further field experience in northern Russia, Georgia, Britain, France, Belgium, Czech and Slovak Republics.
