Background

Welcome to the home page for Fungi of Venezuela. This work had its origins in an earlier UK Darwin Initiative project Fungi of the Caribbean, running from 1998-2001. The objective of that project was to computerize fungal records from the Caribbean, where possible through collaboration with mycologists in each country. There were two main sources of material for that work: specimens in fungal reference collections, and information published in scientific literature. Although the priority of the project was the insular Caribbean, many records from continental countries bordering the Caribbean Sea were also digitized. The largest single component of those were from Venezuela, particularly from specimens in the fungal reference collection of the Universidad Simón Bolívar, Caracas [VEN]. The present website uses those records to provide a first attempt at a digital resource for Venezuelan mycology.
