KHOMUTOVSKI STEPPE NATURE RESERVE |
A new management plan was prepared for the reserve in 2002 by Dr V.P. Heluta (M.G. Kholodny Institute of Botany, Kiev) through a collaborative project involving a team from the reserve, the M.G. Kholodny Institute of Botany and CABI Bioscience, with financial support from the (now closed) UK FCO Environment Protection Fund. The original plan was published (Heluta et al., 2002), and is presented here in a format modified for the internet. Initial implementation of that plan, which involved introduction of horses to control scrub encroachment by grazing, was supported first by the (now closed) UK FCO Environment Protection Fund, then by the UK Darwin Initiative project Restoring Ukraine's Lost Steppe. The work is now supported by the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Some parts of the management plan, as presented here, are historical: the management plan is reviewed periodically, and is adapted to meet new requirements and challenges.
