FUNGI OF UKRAINE, RHYTISMATALES

CRYPTOMYCES Grev. Cryptomycetaceae. 1 Ukrainian species on Salix.

Cryptomyces maximus (Fr.) Rehm [click here for picture] [click here for picture]. Status. Native; 1 record plus several unsuccessful searches; probably extremely rare and localized. Months. No information. Regions. No information. Habitat. on twigs of Salix pentandra. Notes. In fresh collections, the complex apical and basal appendages on the ascospores are unique in the Rhytismatales; like many members of the Rhytismatales, it causes the tissues it inhabits to become paler, though the extensive nature of its fruitbodies means this paler region is limited to a small area around the blackened stroma; the two most recent records, from the British Isles, were from a single bush heavily grazed by ponies; there seem to be no recent descriptions of this rare fungus. Worldwide. Apparently widely, but often very locally distributed on various species of Salix (which in some cases it has probably killed) in Europe, mainly in the north (where it may be less rare), and in North America. References. Minter & Dudka (1996) [Ukrainian records]; Morochovskii, Zerova, Lavitskaya & Smitskaya (1969) [Ukrainian records].
